Cutout works have a simple, abstract form. A wide variety of looks can be achieved by varying the level of detail, cleaning up backgrounds, and manipulating the color palette. Cutout works best for photographs with fairly simple compositions.

Considerations:
- Cutout works best for photographs with fairly simple compositions (one or two foreground objects and backgrounds that are simple or can be removed without detracting from the work)
- If you'd like the Cutout on a solid background color, determine what color you'd like.
- In a more abstract Cutout, the forms look as if they were cut from paper using large straight cuts. In a realistic Cutout, the cuts trace the detailed contours of the shapes.
- Think about whether you would rather have colors vibrant or more muted.
- Artwork done in the Cutout style look good on canvas or paper.
